Lowie is a Living Wage Employer!
When it comes to making each Lowie collection, we do our best to make sure that everyone involved in the manufacturing of our clothing is treated well and paid fairly. It’s something that we value a lot as a company. We’ve always believed in the talent it takes to sew, knit, embroider, weave and dye all of our pieces. Bronwyn regularly goes to India, China, Turkey, and Bulgaria, just to name a few, to personally vet the production of all things Lowie.
Recently, we’ve been doing a lot of thinking about how we can be better. What are some of the ways that we can make life better for all members of the Lowie family from customers to makers to employees? Then it hit us. If we are going to such extents to ensure those involved in Lowie abroad are being paid fairly for their work, shouldn’t we be doing the same at here at home? We decided it was time to not just talk the talk but fully walk the walk. So, we’re excited to announce that Lowie is officially a Living Wage Employer.
.
The Living Wage Foundation is an organisation that champions the fair payment of employees. In the UK, the minimum wage for those aged 21-25 is £7.70 and the national living wage is £8.21 for those over 25. However, these government calculated wages don’t take into account what it costs to live. Life can get expensive especially when you’re living in London. So, in comes the idea of the Living Wage. The Living Wage Foundation calculates what it actually costs to live in the UK. They come up with a living wage for the UK and a second rate that considers the cost of living in London. At present, the Living Wage for the UK is £9.00 and £10.50 for London.
So far, there are more than 5000 accredited Living Wage Employees, and Lowie is just one of them. We’re joining the ranks of companies such as Burberry, Ikea, and KPMG in showing not only members of our Lowie family that we value their hard work but also other employers in hopes of encouraging them to make the same decision we have. Come say hi sometime!
