Celebrating a return to in-person screenings, Herne Hill’s very own FREE film festival is running from 10 May - 20 May 2022 across various venues within a stone’s throw of the Lowie shop.

Established to bring film to all corners of the community, The Herne Hill Free Film Festival (HHFFF) makes the experience of cinema accessible to everyone whilst introducing people to films they might not otherwise come across.

The programme includes a couple of classics, an important documentary and, for those in need of a laugh, a comedy about booze. At each event the Festival will be partnering with Norwood and Brixton Foodbank, to raise awareness of the great work the charity does and to bring food and support to those in need in the local area. If you can spare any food or money that would be greatly appreciated to help this wonderful charity continue the admirable work.

Venues: Various locations around Herne Hill, SE24 (INCLUDING local favourite CANOPY Beer Co. and the iconic Herne Hill Velodrome).

Price: All events are free; no booking is required, but all venues are indoors and have limited capacity

The festival programme kicks off on the 10th May with a return of the Festival’s ever popular Short Film Night, upstairs at The Prince Regent pub.

Thomas Vinterberg’s acclaimed comedy drama, Another Round follows on 12th May at Canopy Beer Co, the local Herne Hill craft brewery (and Lowie staff favourite) just five minutes from our door.

HHFFF’s big outdoor screening will be held at Herne Hill Velodrome on Sunday 15^th May with Tron; the 1982 sci-fi epic by Steven Lisberger.  A cult classic and one of the first ever films to use CGI. Pop-in for a browse before the film starts, we'd love to see you.

On Tuesday 17^th May Herne Hill Baptist Church will host a screening of the award-winning film, The Father, featuring outstanding performances from Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman. We’ve been reliably informed that a Q&A with the film’s producer David Parfitt will follow after the film, so you’re in for a treat if you do manage to get yourself a seat.

Bringing the festival to a close, the 2021 documentary, I am Belmaya, will be screened at The Effra Space on Sunday 20^th May. An inspirational tale of rebellion, courage and hope in patriarchal Nepal, the screening includes a live Q&A with the film’s director Sue Carpenter following the screening.

Now in its 10th year the Herne Hill Free Film Festival is run entirely by volunteers for the good of the community, and this year, is being supported by Pedder Property.
